Video Advocacy

Video is without a doubt one of the most powerful tools on the web. We'll introduce participants to the Witness Video Advocacy Training Guide (and other materials) and use a short version to turn amateur videographer instincts into strategically created and distributed content.

  • Learn how to market a video and integrate it into your campaigns

Check-In (15 minutes) Day 6 Check-In Notes

Session 1: Using Video for Advocacy (60 minutes) Day 6 Session 1 Notes
We will watch Witness' video about using video for advocacy and watch and talk about good examples (and not-so good ones) of web-based advocacy videos, including several of those featured in 10 Tactics for Turning Information into Action.
  • Objective: To introduce the various genres of advocacy video and learn to look and evaluate advocacy videos for success.

Session 2: DIWO Video of the Day (20 minutes) Day 6 Session 3 Notes
We will present participants with a video brief that they will execute "doing it with others," from planning through distribution throughout the rest of the day. The brief will both outline and limit various decisions that need to be made when working with video for advocacy, as well as provide individual teams with the flexibility to choose different advocacy scenarios.
  • Objective: To model and experiment with the advocacy video-making process.

Session 3: 5 Pillars of Video Advocacy (25 minutes) Day 6 Session 2 Notes
We will review the 5 Pillars of Video Advocacy and choose topics for the video participants will produce today.
  • Objective: To familiarize participants with the 5 pillars as a touchstone for planning video advocacy and to use SMART thinking to come up with a topic for the day.

Break (15 minutes)

Session 4: Before Filming (45 minutes) Day 6 Session 4 Notes
Teams will begin the video-making process, focusing on goals, messages, and audience, as well as learn the importance of assessing risks created by video advocacy and the need for informed consent.
  • Objective: To familiarize participants with the advocacy video planning process.

Session 5: Pre-Production & During Filming (60 minutes) Day 6 Session 5 Notes
Teams will assign roles, storyboard their videos, create a shotlist, and produce any non-video materials they need for filming. Then, they will shoot their videos.
  • Objective: To pre-produce and shoot a short advocacy video.

Lunch (60 minutes)

Session 6: After Filming & Subtitling (75 minutes) Day 6 Session 6 Notes
Teams will edit their videos and publish them online with context. We'll also provide a short subtitling/captioning tutorial on dotsub.
  • Objective: To learn how to edit video and to contextualize them, especially on the web. To present options for subtitling.

Session 7: Distribution and Screening (30 minutes) Day 6 Session 7 Notes
Teams will screen their videos and present their distribution plans.
  • Objective: To share the day's work and develop an understanding of the importance of distribution and how to be imaginative when developing your distribution plan.
